MKE Votes
MKE Votes is a non-partisan project designed to raise awareness and pride in voting for the 2020 election in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. One of the biggest themes we heard when talking to disenfranchised voters is that they didn’t think their vote matters. Inspired by the famous “I AM A MAN” signs from the civil rights protests in the 1960s, we designed “I AM A VOTER” signs and shot portraits. This simple message reclaims one’s power and voice as a voter and demands to be seen. My wife and I traveled to Milwaukee to get involved and to create this project. MKE Votes was made possible by several individuals and Milwaukee groups who gave their time and support including Souls to the Polls, EXPO, and Voces de la Frontera to name a few.
Portraits
We shot portraits in public spaces and at voter rallies. Each person had to have voted already, and some even voted in order to be photographed. Photography by Terrance Sims Jr. and Tyronne Moore Jr.
Wild Postings
We turned the portraits into posters and worked with a local team to wheat-paste in high traffic areas in the Black community.
Social Media
Enhanced content on Instagram expanded and amplified the story.
Community Engagement
Postcards, parade signage, and more engagement all around town and on social.
That’s a wrap
Thank you Milwaukee.
